Islington Town Hall Wedding

Islington Town Hall is one of London’s most popular town halls to get married in, and it’s easy to see why. Like many of London’s Town Halls, it’s a listed building and has almost 100 years of history. Located on Upper Street and set back from the road, it has 4 main rooms to get married in (5 if you include the incredibly basic Statutory Room, capacity of just 2 guests). I imagine when most people think about having their wedding at Islington Town hall, the room they think of is the Council Chamber. It’s the largest of all the ceremony rooms, (50 guests on a week day, 85 on a weekend, but works well with less guests as I can attest with a tiny 17 person Covid wedding). A beautiful, vaulted ceiling room with horse shoe style seating, everyone gets a great view. I’ve photographed ceremonies in the Council Chamber at all times of year, and all times of day, and the light has been gorgeous every time. I love a room with lots of natural light, and dark panelled wood, and this room ticks that box (Stoke Newington is another favourite for this very reason).

In addition to the Council Chamber, there’s also the Richmond Suite. Similar in style, and with a lovely fireplace, it seats 60 guests. The dinky little Mayor’s Parlour is a favourite of mine, and is a really lovely space for a tiny wedding. It feels really cosy and intimate, and is a great option if you’re having a small legal ceremony and a separate humanist wedding at a later date, but still want the actual legal bit to feel special. Ellie & Alex did just that, with an intimate wedding in the Mayor’s Parlour followed by cocktails and lunch, and a big beach wedding in Whitstable a few days later.

We absolutely love the photos, we couldn’t be happier with them. We shared them with my family when we went to visit them last week and it was so lovely. They absolutely adored them. Thank you so much.

Useful information for Islington Town Hall weddings

  • When can I get married at Islington Town Hall? Ceremonies in the main Council Chamber take place Tuesday – Friday 10.30am – 3.30pm (extended to 4pm in summer months), Saturdays 10am – 6pm, and selected Sundays 12pm – 3pm. Ceremonies in the Mayor’s Parlour are on Friday’s and Saturdays only, approximately 10am – 5pm. The Richmond Suite is Saturday only.
  • What does it cost to get married at Islington Town Hall? The price depends on which room and what time of year. For a Saturday in summer this year ( 1st April 2023 – 30th September 2023), the Council Chamber will set you back £772 on a Saturday. For the same period in 2024, a Saturday slot will be £941. Sundays are a bit more, Fridays are bit less, and Tuesday – Thursdays are less than Fridays. The Mayor’s Parlour is £551 on a Friday and £659 on a Saturday (1st April 2023 – 30th September 2023) and prices increase slightly for 2024. Find detailed information on ceremony time availability and pricing on the town hall’s website.
  • How many ceremony rooms are there at Islington Town Hall? 4 main ones, and one which is just witnesses only, no guests. The Council Chamber is the largest and grandest (seats 50 on a weekday, 85 on weekends). The Richmond Suite (60 guests), Room 99 (20 guests). and Mayor’s Parlour (4 guests). All of the rooms feature rich wood panelling and Art Deco features, except Room 99 which has lighter painted walls and wooden floor.
  • Excellent steps and outdoor space for your confetti and post wedding mingling. The steps at the front of the building exit onto a paved area which is approximately 50m from the road, so plenty of space if you have a lot of guests milling about. Town halls with steps straight onto the pavement, such as Woolwich, Marylebone, and Chelsea, have a lot less space. Less of an issue with Chelsea as the capacity of the ceremony rooms is small.
  • Lots of great pubs, restaurants, and reception venues nearby to go to for the reception. These include Frederick’s and The Draper’s Arms, which are both walking distance, The Peasant, Coin Laundry, Hackney Coffee Company. Or if you fancy a more dry hire, style-it-yourself vibe, you could consider Shoreditch Studios or Islington Metalworks.
  • There is a pub opposite the town hall, The Vineyard, which is a handy spot for guests to meet before the ceremony.

As journalists, Tommy and I work with world class photographers on a daily basis. Yet it’s not everyday we get back from a shoot to the joy of discovering that the photographer has captured moments and perspectives that we didn’t even know were there, allowing us to tell a better story. Those are the good days…and you made our wedding the best day of all. Your photos are full of wonderful surprises, thoughtful moments, and beautiful compositions. Thank you for capturing our day in a way that goes hand in hand with our experience of it, and will forever illustrate our memories. Plus you were such a pleasure to work with! We couldn’t be more thrilled, thank you.
