Rye Town Hall & The George in Rye Wedding // Ell & Matt

Rye holds a special place in my heart. With cobbled streets, ancient buildings, & wonky ceilinged pubs, it’s difficult not to fall in love with it.  When Steve and I married, we chose Rye Town Hall & The George to do the legal bit and have lunch with close family. We then spent the evening sinking espresso martinis in their bar with a roaring fire, Monopoly and cheeseboards, throwing a big party on the beach in Whitstable the following evening. Three years later, almost to the day, our dear friends Matt & Ellen got married at Rye Town Hall and The George in Rye, and asked us to photograph it for them. (Matt was my second photographer for the Mihir Garh wedding I photographed in India.) Steve and I love the opportunity to work together, and being able to document the wedding of such special friends, as well as getting to party with them and our photographer mates, meant we looked forward to it like a kid looks foward to Christmas.

On the day, Steve spent the morning with Matt and I spent it with Ellen. The forecast promised heavy rain and we almost made it to the town hall before it started chucking it down. “What happened to taking a slow walk?” called Ell’s dad from way behind us as she hot-footed it up the hill. Not wanting wet hair or desperate to get in there and see Matt? Either way, we arrived at the town hall bang on time, to be greeted by the town crier. An exceptionally emotional start to proceedings, which I think took everyone by surprise, and after a collective deep breath, Matt & Ell were married in a ceremony that was full of humour, tears, and laughter.

The George in Rye Wedding

By the time we left the town hall it was torrential. Fortunately, the quick thinking guys from The George headed up to the town hall to meet us, armed with brollies and champagne. The town crier rang his bell and the marriage was proclaimed (as is the tradition in Rye). Then it was back down  to The George for aperol spritz and nibbles before dinner and speeches.

Steve and I headed out with Matt & Ell for some portraits. A slightly different scenario to a usual portrait session, as really it was just 4 mates wandering around Rye, chatting, only one of them was wearing a big white dress, one was wearing the sharpest suit known to man, and the other two were armed with cameras.

Back to The George, and everyone was ready to PAR-TAY. It had been too wet to throw confetti earlier in the day, so everyone made up for it during the first dance. Once the dancefloor was opened, it stayed full all night, unsurprisingly as the band were INCREDIBLE. The dance floor was a riot, with everyone going crazy to Rage Against the Machine and AC/DC, and, erm, impassioned renditions of Bon Jovi. Unlikely bedfellows, but it all came together perfectly and made for a brilliant night.

These are some of my favourites, with a smattering of Steve’s thrown in from the first part of the day. You can see Steve’s images (with a handful of his favourites of mine) right here

As documentary wedding photographers, preserving memories for people is what we do. Being able to do so for people who mean a lot to you is extra special. We had so much fun photographing Matt & Ell’s wedding and wish them a lifetime of happiness and adventures!
