The Dreys Wedding // Humanist Woodland Wedding

Outside my window it’s cold, grey and damp. Christmas is but two sleeps away and everyone is preparing to say goodbye to 2017. Most photographers are ending the year with their “best of the year” posts, a curated selection of their favourite images from the past 12 months. Mine usual emerges around March time, sometimes as late as May, and this year will be no different. I still have 2 London weddings to process as well as a mammoth 3 day wedding in India. Picking my favourite images from the year is still a long way off. Instead, my last post of the year is a dreamily romantic woodland wedding which took place on a cloudless sunny day in July. A wedding fit to burst with the beautiful, the original and the downright mind-blowing. Ben and Emily, or Bemily as they are known to their friends, picked The Dreys in Squirrel Wood for their wedding.

Humanist Ceremony in the Woods

A beautiful woodland location tucked away in the Kent countryside, with a little forest clearing for the ceremony and vast open fields behind the woods for the feasting and the dancing. I was lucky enough to have my talented husband, Stephen Bunn, shooting with me on the day, which started with the couple getting ready at separate locations before having a first look in the woods. A great way to calm the nerves and have a moment together before the ceremony.

Ben walked down the aisle with his parents, and Emily with hers. Both were preceded by Emily’s twin nieces, cute as buttons in their little fairy wings. The humanist ceremony was performed by Kate Gee. It was full of unique touches, including a group singalong to Queen’s ”Don’t Stop Me Now” and a tree planting ceremony. Food was a big part of Ben & Emily’s day. They are both committed vegans and as such the entire wedding was vegan, and included an amazing hummous station, a Sri Lankan buffet and a Taco Van in the evening. Some of the best wedding food I have had, hands down.

Emily’s horse, the wonderful 25 year old Zac, made a brief appearance and got stuck into the carrots with gusto. Speeches took place outside, and were full of laughter and tears, and included an amazing and hilarious letter read out by Emily’s mum: a letter Emily had written to her about Ben, when they’d first met, 13 years ago. Evening guests were welcomed with a glass of champagne poured from the sky by incredible aerial artist Anna Cerrato. A glitter artist was on hand to get everyone party ready.

The night time shenanigans got started and the dancefloor was full of sparkling, glittery people all night. Emily and Ben’s The Dreys wedding was a celebration of all the things they hold dear. It reflected their beliefs and their passions as well as their love for their family and friends. Steve and I couldn’t have had more fun photographing it. If you’d like to see more images from their boho wedding, head on over to the Love My Dress blog, and if you’d like the details of their dreamteam of suppliers, scroll to the end of the post. But look at the pictures first, of course 😉

Happy Christmas to you all! See you in 2018. x

  1. Wow a very comprehensively captured day, this wedding had it all. Excellent choice on levels of exposure and colours, the editing really suited the occasion. V nice to have the overcast light for the ceremoney and then the afternoon sunshine to follow around couple shoot time. Both parents walking each in and planting a tree awww man. A great looking crowd with lost of expressive personality, and what about that food, looked amazing. Dream wedding, congratulation on the great work.

  2. What beautiful photographs! I love your style, woodland weddings are my fave (i’m a self-confessed tree hugger;-) Great to see another lady photographer who’s married to another amazing man photographer ;-P

  3. Love this post because the camera holder captures all the details of the present movement and captures the love of the couple in the picture and some candid shots make this beautiful shot more beautiful.
