Villa la Vedetta Wedding // Patricia & Rick

Florence is undoubtedly one of Italy’s most beautiful cities, and just made for destination weddings. The capital of Tuscany, it’s a myriad of tiny cobbled streets, stunning architecture, and some of the world’s most famous artworks. Amongst them, the infamous Michelangelo’s David, resplendent in his birthday suit, and often found surrounded by giggling school children. In addition, there’s the Uffizi Gallery, crammed full of Da Vincis, Carravagios and Botticellis. However, the art, the weather, the food and the wine was not why I headed there in August 2015. That was just a bonus. I was there to photograph the wedding of Patricia & Rick, a couple so up for adventure they didn’t bother flying to Italy for their wedding. Why fly when you can drive there? In a Mini. With Patricia’s wedding dress. And numerous cases of hard liquor. And a tonne of candles. Oh, and some bird cages. A Mini Adventure.

It was a long and languorous weekend for the couple and their families and friends. Most had travelled from the UK, and a handful from around the world, including Patricia’s family from Romania. The wedding day itself was at Villa la Vedetta, a majestic yet intimate 5 star hotel perched high on a hilltop, with incredible views of Florence. The girls got ready and helped Patricia pour herself into the most incredible backless dress, the look completed with vertiginous Alexander McQueen heels. She looked a knockout.

The ceremony was held outside in the garden, and was full of tears and laughter. Flurries of confetti, canapés and ice cold champagne for everyone, and a short journey down the hill for myself and the newlyweds for some portraits in the city centre. Anyone who’s ever been in Florence on a stinkingly hot Saturday afternoon in August can understand just how busy it is. For those of you who haven’t, it’s busy. Really busy. The couple drew admiring glances (that dress again) and a few whoops and cheers.

Back at Villa la Vedetta it was on to dinner, served on the terrace with the majestic Duomo, the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, in the background and the slowly setting sun. Just magical. The food was incredible, and was followed by the speeches; a few embarrassments for Rick from his best men and their powerpoint presentation (my eyes, they cannot un-see!), a speech in Romanian by Patricia, and the men at the wedding cursing Rick for his admission that he buys Patricia flowers every week. EVERY week. Who said romance is dead?

The rest of the night was spent dancing, quite literally, under the stars, with sparklers, copious amounts of Romanian brandy and the excellent local DJ, Fabiodex,  who kept the dance floor full into the small hours. An unforgettable wedding in a stunning location with the coolest and craziest of couples, here are some favourites from Patricia and Rick’s destination wedding in Florence.
